Spring is here!
We often hear about spring cleaning, but there are also spring home maintenance items to do once the warmer weather rolls around.
I found a good list to share from Bob Vila’s site.
Exterior:
Check your Roof – You may not need need to climb up there, necessarily, but if you have binoculars, you can make sure it all looks OK. You can also hire a roofing company to do an inspection if you can’t see enough to make sure all is well.
Check your Chimney – Make sure there isn’t vegetation growing or visible cracks. Again, you can hire a chimney company to do an inspection to make sure all is OK too.
Check Your Exterior Walls – Is there staining? That generally indicates water isn’t being taken care of by the gutters. You can call a gutter company to help – or you can try to clean out your gutters if that may be the issue.
Which brings up – Check your Gutters. Make sure they are cleaned out to handle spring rain!
Check your Foundation – If you see cracks, call a professional to come seal it. Regular caulk won’t work long term.
Check your Windows – Are the seals intact? If you see fogging on the glass, it can indicate the seal is broken, meaning the seals aren’t working properly to keep out heat, cold, and the elements. Also, you can take this time to clean your windows!
Decks – Check for splintered wood so you can have portions replaced as needed. Reseal and stain your deck if appropriate!
Pull out Outdoor Furniture and wash it!
Check your grill – for cobwebs, leaks, and dirt and grime.
Inside:
HVAC – Change your filter. It is also a good idea to have your unit serviced to make sure it is running efficiently through the upcoming hot months.
Attic – If you can access your attic, check for animals and insects that may have come in over the winter. Also, check for mold – and call a professional if you see it.
Basement – Another place where insects and moisture can be an issue, especially as we get into the warmer months. Check for cracks, moisture, and call a professional if you find an issue!
Check for leaky pipes – under sinks, toilets, etc.
This is a basic Spring Home Maintenance checklist to get you started. There may be items on this list that you don’t have – or items you may have that aren’t listed. Going over your home carefully to check for potentially issues is always a good idea!
